How to Do Data Code Analysis

Coding itself is the process of organizing and sorting data, but performing a coding analysis is the process of cleaning things up afterward. It can answer the question as to what a specific evaluation is about.

It’s a necessary part of the coding process, and while some see it as a necessary evil there are others who view it as something that they actually enjoy and appreciate. By following a few tips everyone should be able to have fun with it and do a good job.

Sorting Out the Code

When doing a code analysis, it’s best to understand what each category of code is defined as. There are several different types of code that most people will come into contact with, and creating code is a skill that most people who do these kinds of studies will develop over time.

  • Pre-set Codes: Anyone who is starting the data collection and coding process will probably start off with a list of pre-set a priori codes that were derived from the initial conceptual framework. These codes represent the list of research questions and problem areas that started the research to begin with. A start list can have anywhere between 10-50 codes.
  • Emergent Codes: Any ideas that come out over time represent emergent codes. There are cases where people start the research and then find that there are many more questions that have arisen as a result of the coding analysis process. Once these questions come up in the internal conversation of a statistical data analysis, it’s important for people to address them and add them into the existing code list.
  • Refined Codes: Over time even this list might be refined. Additional codes will have to be created, but sometimes some of the pre-set and emergent codes might merge together as the research project becomes more and more focused as it goes on. Some codes might be split into two as well.
  • Coding Notes: During the process of coding some of the notes that were created during the data collection process will become individual codes in their own right. Think of everything that was made. Marginal remarks are often important when completing this step. Many people take respondent pages and mark them up. That’s yet another solid source of codes when it comes down to it. Don’t neglect anything during the analysis process, because anything could be important and make for a solid conclusion.

Finishing the  Code Analysis

There’s also a conceptual aspect to source code analysis on top of the mathematical one. It generally comes after the mathematical aspect has been completed.

Drawing conclusions from the analysis is an important part of any project, especially if it’s an academic one. Those who are writing projects for school are probably required to submit a paragraph if not a full typed report about what the data represented.
